Why is training so important?

Child protection training is a specialised field which is currently not adequately covered in social work qualifications or training for professionals working with children like police and nurses.

Many people in these roles assume that they would know how to recognise and respond to child abuse if the situation arose. Sadly the reality is quite different. Time and again after a tragic child death, family, neighbours, and professionals are criticised because they failed to recognise the abuse and did not respond to protect the child.

Child Matters recommends that all those working with children and whanau engage in Child Protection training to: recognise when children are at risk of harm; recognise when children are being abused or neglected; know how to manage if a child of a family member makes disclosure of abuse; and have the confidence and knowledge to intervene to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children.
