The Child Protection in Practice course equips professionals with immediately applicable and practical skills and knowledge to enhance their child protection practice.
Intermediate-Level Child Protection Training
This is a 6-week Level 3 NZQA certified micro-credential. Delivered by Child Matters, this course provides practical professional education in child protection knowledge and advocacy.
The purpose of this course is to build on existing foundational knowledge and skills for those working with children and young people. Participants will explore the wider context of child abuse in Aotearoa and strengthen their understanding of child protection practice, immediately applicable to their mahi.
Participants will gain the skills and confidence necessary to support safe practice within their organisation and contribute constructively to the wider child protection system.
Entry criteria apply. To ensure you have a strong baseline of knowledge, please ensure you have completed a Foundational training course with Child Matters before applying for this course.
At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

Apply knowledge of the social, cultural, and systemic context of child abuse and family violence in Aotearoa, to identify and explain risk, vulnerability, protective and resilience factors relevant to their workplace setting.

Apply child-centred and trauma-informed principles in practice, including recognising the impact of trauma and ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) on development and behaviour.

Respond appropriately to child protection concerns using best practice guidelines, including managing disclosures, documenting accurately, and escalating concerns efficiently and appropriately.

Apply knowledge of relevant child protection legislation and information-sharing provisions to workplace scenarios.
